The starting point
A small country with a big voice
Start with a simple idea. A country of about 31 million people cannot win arguments on size or money alone. So Ghana has built its influence the other way: by joining, hosting and leading the organisations where countries meet.
It began on day one. Ghana became independent on 6 March 1957, joined the Commonwealth that same day as its ninth member,2 and was admitted to the United Nations two days later, on 8 March 1957.1
Africa first
From African unity to ECOWAS
Nkrumah believed that newly independent African states would only be strong together. He and Ethiopia's Emperor Haile Selassie helped found the Organisation of African Unity on 25 May 1963.3 In 2002, the OAU was replaced by today's African Union.
Closer to home, Ghana was one of the fifteen West African countries that signed the Treaty of Lagos on 28 May 1975, creating the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS.5 ECOWAS is why Ghanaians can travel to other member states without a visa, and why other West Africans can come here.18
The region has been tested lately. After military takeovers, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger formally left ECOWAS on 29 January 2025 and formed their own Alliance of Sahel States.5 Burkina Faso is our northern neighbour, so this matters to Ghana directly. The Mahama government has chosen dialogue over sanctions and appointed a special envoy to the Alliance.2324
Africa's single market
The AfCFTA, headquartered in Accra
The African Continental Free Trade Area aims to turn Africa's many separate markets into one. Ghana was quick to commit: on 10 May 2018, Ghana and Kenya became the first countries to deposit their instruments of ratification with the African Union.6
Ghana then won the right to host the Secretariat, the body that runs the agreement. The Secretariat building in Accra was commissioned and handed over to the African Union on 17 August 2020.7
The United Nations
Peacekeepers, a Secretary-General and a historic resolution
Ghana is one of the world's most reliable peacekeepers. In February 2026 it was the seventh-largest contributor of uniformed personnel to UN missions, with 1,935 people deployed.8 Ghanaian troops have served with the UN force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, since 1978, and Ghana is that mission's oldest contributing country.9
That mission is now ending. The UN Security Council has extended UNIFIL's mandate for a final time, to 31 December 2026, with withdrawal to follow.10 For Ghana's armed forces, it closes a chapter of almost half a century.
Ghanaians have also led at the top. Kofi Annan, born in Kumasi, was UN Secretary-General from 1997 to 2006 and shared the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize with the United Nations.12 Ghana served on the Security Council for 2022 and 2023,11 and has been re-elected to the Human Rights Council for 2027 to 2029.14
On 25 March 2026, the UN General Assembly adopted a Ghana-led resolution declaring the trafficking of enslaved Africans and racialised chattel enslavement the gravest crime against humanity. It passed with 123 votes in favour, 3 against (Argentina, Israel and the United States) and 52 abstentions, and says claims for reparations are a concrete step towards remedy.13
Big partners
China, the United States, Europe and the diaspora
China. Ghana and China established diplomatic relations on 5 July 1960.15 China is Ghana's largest trading partner,25 and the Chinese Embassy put two-way trade at a record US$14.1 billion in 2025. China's zero-tariff policy for African partners, effective 1 May 2026, covers Ghanaian goods such as cocoa products, cashew and shea butter.16
The United States. The relationship is old and personal. The very first Peace Corps volunteers in the world were sent to Ghana, and Nkrumah received them on 30 August 1961.17 In September 2025, Ghana agreed to accept West African nationals deported from the United States. The government said it would help them return to their home countries.18
Britain and Europe. As a former British colony, Ghana keeps close ties with the United Kingdom and remains an active Commonwealth member.2
The diaspora. Ghana has made itself a home for people of African descent. The "Year of Return, Ghana 2019" marked 400 years since the first enslaved Africans arrived in Jamestown, Virginia, and drew visitors from across the diaspora.26
In the news
What to watch in 2026
- BRICS. In October 2026, Cabinet approved a bid to join BRICS, the group of emerging economies that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.19 On 5 November, President Mahama clarified that Ghana is seeking to join as a partner, not a full member, and the bid needs the agreement of existing members.20
- Visa-free Africa. The Ghana Immigration Service has announced visa-free entry for all African passport holders, supported by a new e-visa platform.21
- The Sahel. Keeping good relations with the Alliance of Sahel States while staying firmly in ECOWAS.24
