Your data

Privacy notice

What we collect when you sign up for The Sankofa Brief, why we collect it, who handles it and how you stay in control.

Bottom line

We ask for one thing: your email address. We use it only to send you The Sankofa Brief. We never sell it, and you can leave at any time.

You can read every page on this site without signing up and without giving us any personal details.

1. Who we are

Who is responsible for your data

The Sankofa Brief is owned and managed by Esson Consult, a business registered in Ghana and based in Accra. Esson Consult decides how the information you give us is used, which makes it the data controller for this website.

To ask anything about your data, write to hello@thesankofabrief.com.

2. What we collect

The information we hold

When you sign up for the brief, we keep:

  • your email address;
  • a record that you ticked the box agreeing to receive the brief;
  • the date and time you signed up;
  • the page you signed up on; and
  • the country your internet connection came from. This is worked out automatically from the connection, not from your exact location.

We do not ask for your name, phone number, address or any other details.

When you simply read the site, we collect nothing about you. This site uses no advertising cookies, no tracking cookies and no analytics tools. Like every website, our hosting company handles technical information such as your device's internet (IP) address so that it can deliver pages and block attacks. The typefaces on this site load from Fontshare, so your browser also connects to their servers.

3. Why we use it

One purpose only

We use your email address to send you The Sankofa Brief each Sunday, along with any essential messages about your subscription, such as a change to this notice.

We rely on your consent, which you give by ticking the box when you sign up.1 We will not use your address for any other purpose unless we first ask for and receive your permission.

Giving us your email address is entirely your choice. If you choose not to, the only consequence is that you will not receive the brief by email. Everything on the website stays free to read.

4. Who else handles it

The services we use, and nobody else

  • Cloudflare, Inc. hosts this website and stores the signup list in a private storage area that only Esson Consult can access.
  • Kit (kit.com), a specialist email service based in the United States, keeps a copy of the subscriber list and delivers the brief to your inbox. Kit also records basic email statistics, such as whether an email was opened, which help us improve the brief.

We never sell your data. Selling personal data is a criminal offence under Act 843,1 and it is not something we would do anyway. We will only disclose your information to a public authority if the law requires us to.

Cloudflare runs a worldwide network and Kit is based in the United States, so your information may be stored or processed outside Ghana, including in the United States. It remains protected by the security measures described below.

5. How long we keep it

Only while you want the brief

We keep your details for as long as you stay subscribed. If you unsubscribe, we delete your details within 30 days. We may keep a note of the email address alone, solely so that we never email you again by mistake.

6. Keeping it safe

How we protect it

Your details travel over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection and are stored in a private storage area that is not public and cannot be reached from this website. Only Esson Consult can open the list, and access is protected by restricted security keys.

7. Your rights

You stay in control

Under Act 843 you have the right to:

  • know what data we hold about you, why we hold it and who receives it, and get a copy. We will reply within 40 days, as the law requires (sections 32 and 35);
  • correct or delete data that is wrong, out of date or no longer needed (section 33);
  • withdraw your consent and object at any time, after which we stop using your data (section 20);
  • stop any marketing to you at any time (section 40);
  • not be subject to decisions made purely by computer that significantly affect you. We make no such decisions (section 41);
  • compensation if you suffer damage or distress because we break the Act (section 43); and
  • complain to the Data Protection Commission.2

To use any of these rights, email hello@thesankofabrief.com. To stop receiving the brief, use the unsubscribe link at the bottom of any email, or simply write to us.1

8. Changes

If this notice changes

We will update this page and the date below. If a change affects how we use your email address, we will tell subscribers by email before it takes effect.
